What’s in this course?
This day is designed as a practical and progressive journey: starting from the fundamentals of visual programming in Max, we will build a fully functioning synthesizer together, understanding step by step the logic of digital sound, synthesis, and control.
The goal is to provide a solid foundation for using Max MSP as a creative tool for performance, sound design, and interactive systems.
Building a Synthesizer – Intensive Workshop (6 hours)
Course Curriculum: MAX MSP MODULES
• What Max MSP is and the contexts in which it is used (electronic music, installations, audiovisual performance, interactive art)
• Interface and patch structure
• Objects, messages, inlets and outlets
• Signal flow vs message flow
• Difference between event domain and audio domain (control rate / signal rate)
Objective: understand the logic of patching and how the system works.
• What a sound wave is
• Frequency, amplitude, phase
• Audio signal in Max (~)
• Basic objects: cycle~, phasor~, noise~
• Audio output with dac~
Building the first working oscillator.
• Frequency-controlled oscillator
• Amplitude control
• Sending notes via MIDI keyboard or computer keyboard
• Introduction to envelopes (ADSR)
• Objects: adsr~, line~, function
Creating a first playable synthesizer voice.
• LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator)
• Frequency modulation (basic FM)
• Amplitude modulation (AM)
• Signal routing
• Creating more complex sound textures
Objective: transform the basic synth into an expressive instrument.
• Patch organization
• Use of subpatches
• Introduction to modular design concepts
• Cleaning and optimizing signal flow
• Creating a final version of the synthesizer
• Building a UI in Presentation Mode
Final practical session in which each participant builds their own customized synthesizer.
During the workshop, we will cover:
• Digital sound logic
• Synthesis strategies
• Modular structure
• MIDI and external control
• Workflow for live performance

He develops custom tools for sound synthesis and performative control, exploring the balance between algorithmic processes and human intervention. Within Gosse Ipotesis, he leads the artistic direction of the project, shaping its conceptual framework, sonic identity, and performative structure.

Matilde (Italy)
Senior Mentor
Matilde is an artist, programmer, and mathematician, and a member of RKH Studio. His practice is centered on programming, signal analysis, and the design of generative algorithms for audiovisual performance. He works on the technical development of complex systems that enable real-time interaction between sound and image. In Gosse Ipotesis, he oversees the system architecture and technical integration, ensuring coherence, stability, and responsiveness across the project’s audiovisual components.
